Canadian diamonds are traced from the mine to the cutter, all the way to the purchase. Diamonds were first found in the Northwest Territory of Canada in 1991. Since that time several mines have opened and made Canada the third largest supplier of diamonds, producing 15 percent of the world’s diamonds. In just four years, 1998 to 2002, the Canadian diamond industry mined 13.8 million carats of diamonds worth $2.8 billion.

Not only are diamonds mined in Canada free of the negative association of blood or conflict diamonds (gems sold to fund civil wars and rebel armies in Africa), but they are often very high quality diamonds as well. They offer some of the whitest and largest rough diamonds available today. The price per carat indicates the size, color and clarity of a rough diamond. In 2001, Canadian diamonds averaged $228 per carat making them the supplier of the third highest price per carat diamonds in the world.

To insure that your diamond is from a Canadian mine, you need to look for two things—the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) certificate and the accompanying laser inscription. Diamonds mined from the Northwest Territories have a serial number laser inscribed on its girdle (the rim between the flatter top of the stone and its pointed end). This number indicated which mine the diamond came from and each stone has its own unique number.
