The oldest known earrings came from the royal graves of Iraq and date back to 2,500 BC. Early earrings were either hoops or pendants. While the popularity of all jewelry, including earrings, faded during the Middle Ages, changing styles during the 16th century allowed the adornments to re-emerge. During this time period, more elaborate, heavy styles of earrings were created.
By the early 1800s, jewelers had figured out a way to mount gemstones so that the back of the earring was open, allowing light to shine through the stone. Although later in the century, earrings once again fell out of favor, they became a major fashion accessory again during the 20th century. Diamonds have figured prominently in earring designs in the last 100 years. The classic look is a post earring with a diamond solitaire. Also popular are small hoops inlaid with diamonds. Both styles are classics that can be worn everyday with just about any outfit and at any age. Of course there are more dramatic and intricate options as well. Chandelier earrings became popular during the 1920s and 1930s. In recent years, this style garnered a lot of attention, when many celebrities revived the style by wearing it on the red carpet.
It is common today for women to wear different earrings for day and night. Fortunately, diamond earrings are appropriate for both, depending on the style you select. Diamond earrings have also become popular gift items for a special birthday or occasion, such as a graduation.
