If you only think of the traditional, round cut shape when someone says diamond, then you are missing out. There are at least 11 different diamond cuts available today. Variations on these cuts, as well as fanciful shapes such as flowers, give diamond lovers many possibilities.
The classic cut that first comes to most people’s mind is the round brilliant. Created with 58 facets or cuts, the round brilliant offers high sparkle. More than 75% of diamonds bought have this shape.
An oval diamond has an elongated shape that is good for women with small hands. A marquise shaped diamond has two pointed ends. A combination of the oval and marquise shape, a pear shaped diamond also gives the illusion of length to shorter fingers or small hands. The heart shaped diamond is essentially a pear shape with a cleft at the top.
An emerald cut diamond is a rectangular shaped stone with cut corners. It may also be referred to as a step cut because of the flat levels that comprise it that resemble stair steps. Combining the rectangular shape of the emerald cut and the multi-faceted brilliance of the round, radiant cut diamonds have 70 facets.
The princess cut, a square, multi-faceted shape is a newer choice for diamonds. The Asscher cut is also referred to as a square cut emerald. Like an emerald it has cropped corners and a step cut.
Trilliant diamonds resemble triangles. Depending on the diamond cutter and the stone, a trilliant can have either pointed corners or a more rounded, triangular shape.
